Smiling with braces, and the Form 6 dilemma

Assalamualaikum! Dah lama tak tulis entry yang bercerita. Lately asyik letak gambaq ja. Sebab? Malas mengarang. And I've been really busy with some professional and personal stuff. Good news going to be revealed soon. Just sharing the news with my closest friends for now.

Ok. It's been almost 4 months since I've been wearing my braces. Mungkin susah nak makan selama 24 jam. Esoknya, InsyaAllah akan ok balik. Tapi tak la sakit macam mula-mula pakai dulu. Sakit sikit saja. Aku siap boleh drive balik rumah Penang-Changlun 2 1/2 jam straight lepas jumpa dentist.

Rupa-rupanya, susah betul nak senyum bila pakai braces. Bila pakai braces, kalau aku senyum tak nampak gigi, nampak seperti senyuman dibuat-buat. Nampak macam senyum menyampah pon ada. Alah macam kita senyum nak perli orang tu. Walaupun aku tak berniat langsung. Kadang-kadang je aku dapat mengawal muscle muka supaya bila senyum tak nampak gigi, aku nampak normal seperti biasa dan bukan seperti seorang pengkidnap budak bersiri.

Jadi sekarang, kalau bergambar, aku akan cuba senyum luas-luas macam esok nak kahwin. Eh esok ke? taklah. Lambat lagi. Senyum macam sengih kambing. Kerang busuk. Sengih macam baru dapat gaji hari ini. Eh hari ini ke? Minggu depan lah. InsyaAllah.... Tak biasa lah senyum macam ni. Jadi agak kekok. So in the end aku nampak macam senyum plastik. Ah macam-macam la. Tutup mulut susah bukak mulut pun susah. Kalau tak senyum, nanti dikata sombong. Lagipun senyum itu sedekah, kan? So senyum je lah walaupun kadang-kadang I swear to God I think I look terencat.

On a totally unrelated subject, sekarang aku secara officialnya sedang mengajar MUET. I HAVE NO FRIGGIN IDEA what I should be teaching in class, but for now I'm still on the level of measuring their English proficiency and improving their courage to speak up in class. I have noticed a few things with my Pra U1:

1. ALL of the students in the class is taller and bigger than me.
2. They are 18 years old, and they look like bapak-bapak and mak-mak budak already.
3. Not much of a discipline problem with these grown up kids. When I talk in class, they listen like it's the end of the world. God is MUET that interesting???!!!

Teaching MUET is harder than it seems. Because they do not have a syllabus like Form 1 till Form 5. But some teachers have been reassuring me that teaching in Form 6 is one of the express way to naik pangkat, aside from GC (Guru Cemerlang). If you have an experience of teaching Form 6 for 4 or 5 years, you can apply to be appointed as GAT6 (Guru Akedemik Tingkatan 6). And when you are appointed, your DG status will automatically be increased to DG 44 (whilst the time-based normal method is going to cost you 10 years to move from DG41 to DG44). So my teacher-friends out there, lets apply for GC or GAT6 as fast as we can! Perlulah berusaha untuk memajukan diri kita, betul?

So far I feel blessed with life. Going to take a huge step in life soon, and my career is just showing a promising future. InsyaAllah. And I miss my friends. Seeing them soon at the end of the month. Can't wait, literally. =D

Busy busy bee

Oh my my. This weekend has been super hectic for me! Sports training at school, driving mom to everywhere, twice dentist trips within three days! It was tiring, really. On Thursday afternoon after school, I drove straight to Penang for my first dental appointment after a month wearing braces. The dentist changed the wire to a bigger one so that the teeth could be 'forced' to move. Got home around 7 or 8 pm, I practically crashed on my bed like a big fat whale.

On Friday I went out with my brothers, my sister and my mom. Dad was at work and my other brother had classes because he is lame! (haha jk) So, we went to Alor Setar because my mom needs a new pair of shoes, and after that we stopped by at Jitra because she needs to buy some curtain. Guess who was the driver? The eldest daughter of course! At first I was really2 reluctant to go because I wanted to take what used to be my daily dose of afternoon naps (it's been sooo long since I had one!). But my sister and my youngest brother insisted that I came along, so, being the loving eldest that I am, I went (and be their driver for the whole day, driving everyone everywhere). Here are some piccas we took!

Me feeling the soft, soft towels like a crazy person

I remember when I was in high school, I came here and adored they way they colour-coded the towels. I still love it!
The two brothers
McD for lunch. Yummy! Shazwan Zakaria, if you are reading this, I CAN EAT IT NOW. Sekian.
I got it from my mama
With my only sister, and our little man, trying to ruin the shot

That is for Friday. On saturday morning, wait lemme correct that. During the early hours of Saturday morning (4 friggin AM, to be precise) I was woken up by a horrible pain on my gum. Went to the toilet to check it out, turns out that one of the brackets for my braces came friggin off! The hardened cement (used to attach the bracket to the teeth) was so thin, it sliced through my gum, making it bleed and swollen like there's no tomorrow. So I went back to bed, tossed and turned till it's 6.30 and woke up, get ready for my sports practice at school.

Yeah, I go to school 6 days a week because I love it so much (not!). The practice went from 8 to about 10.30 am. After practice all the teachers went for a drink and although I just want to go home and suffer alone, I agreed to join them. Social gathering and whatsoever, but every passing minute felt like I was in gum hell. After that I went back home at 12, and cried my eyes out like nobody's business because the pain has become so friggin unbearable. At 1pm, finally I decided to drive to the clinic to fix my braces, alone, despite my teary eyes and unbearable pain. So I drove there back and forth like my grandfather owns the road, also pretending like the PDRM summons are just an invitation to the Cinderella ball. I just got back from Penang about an hour ago. 'Tiring' won't even be enough to describe how I feel right now. But at least the gum pain is gone, the bleeding has stopped and the swell has subsided. Alhamdulillah...

Thank you, Zombee, for the sweet and comforting words when I was crying out of pain. Sorry I yelled at you. I yelled because I don't know what else to do. And thank you for the effort of calling every dental clinic in Jitra and Alor Setar to inquire about my braces situation, despite the fact that I yelled at you and you have no Maxis reception atm. That was very thoughtful of you. I really2 appreciate that. God will reply your kindness, InsyaAllah.

P/S: Guess who is the new sickly underweight chick on the block? I couldn't even believe my eyes! Dang! I even paid and got up on the weighing machine twice, just to make sure there's no mistake. My mom saw these numbers and scolded me for being underweight! What??! It's not my fault! I've been eating twice as much, and been very active with all the sports training, the most active I have been in three years time. I even did push ups and cardio with the students. But, why? -_-

Braces part two

Ini adalah second time aku nak tulis pasal braces. Kenapa? Because I have some time to kill, and taktau nak tulis apa. Jadi, aku tulis pasal braces. Alhamdulillah, dah dekat 2 minggu pakai, kesakitan yang terlampau waktu mula2 pakai dah surut. Cuma kadang2, especially malam, sakit tu datang balik kejap-kejap. Tapi selalunya sakit one or two particular teeth saja, tak macam awal2 dulu, setiap batang pon rasa macam nak tercabut keluar dari mulut. Betul la apa orang cakap, beauty is pain. Anda setuju? Tapi sekarang dah tak makan painkiller lagi walaupun sakit. Sebab? Dulu aku pernah ada allergies dengan painkiller. Eh bukan allergies, more to side effect la. A bad one. Jadi, as long as boleh tahan sakit dengan daya minda sendiri, aku bertekad takmau makan painkiller.

Another road trip for me, maybe? Nak ajak Miza and Mamat pegi sekali kalau diorang free, balik nanti boleh ronda2 Penang macam hari tu. Tadi jumpa kat Resepi Rahsia pon sekejap sangat, tak habis nak borak. Takpe, next weekend jumpa lagi, InsyaAllah. =)

Aduh, bosan sudah cakap pasal braces ni. Tapi kan, actually pakai braces bila dah keja as a teacher memang sangat mencabar. Sebab? Susah nak bercakap sikit. Lagi susah nak menjerit. Aku ada problem bila nak sebut 'S' kuat-kuat. Bila sebut nada biasa, no hal, tak ada masalah. Bila nak jerit 'DIAM SEMUA!' selalu bunyinya jadi 'DIAM TEMUA!'. Aduh, susah kot. Kadang2 aku kaver malu dengan bercakap pasal benda lain atau marah budak2 tak berhenti, so diorang takde la perasan sangat aku bercakap macam lidah pendek, kan?

Cakap pasal mengajar, Alhamdulillah tadi dah siap 8 lesson plans for 5 classes, untuk hari Ahad dan Isnin depan. Selasa cuti sempena Maulidur Rasul katanya. Alhamdulillah, rehat sekejap tengah2 minggu tu. Leganya. Duduk rumah je la kot. Staying home is nice and all, but I have to sacrifice my freedom. Boleh je keluar, macam tadi selamba badak je aku keluar, it's just that the curfew at 7pm applies (but of course, I always come back around 8 or 9pm. Rules are meant to be broken...no???). And I can't go out every single day. Tapi apa kejadah nak keluaq tiap2 hari kan, penat kot. Balik sekolah pukul 3.30 or 4pm. Bila sampai rumah ja dah rasa macam nyawa di hujung tanduk. Buat keja, prepare lesson plan, terus tidoq.

Esok cuti lagi. Nak rehatkan minda, petang esok nak kena pegi beli stationaries, and malam pulak nak buat materials untuk lesson nanti. Ish banyak pulak aku membebel kan. Entah apa-apa pulak. Tido la. Dah lewat ni cikgu. Selamat malam sayang-sayangku. Moga mimpi indah-indah malam ni...Tapi jangan lupa baca doa tidur sebelum tidur ok! ;)

The tale of braces

Okay, this post was inspired by Zombee (someone so so dear). I just had my braces on last Friday, and he suggested that I should write about the experience of wearing it. Most people would have thought, "Alah, banyak je blog orang lain yang pakai braces kan. Kecoh la lu!" Tapi, tapi, tapi....this blog is different in a sense that I am wearing a set of SELF-LIGATING BRACES, and not the metal kind, but the CLEAR BRACKETS. I know for a fact that not many Malaysians are aware of this type of braces, or they know but not many people have been wearing it. I'm not sure how I'm going to write this but I guess I'm just going to do it FAQ style. I'll come up with frequently asked questions that I think braces wearer or future braces wearer might want to know, and then I'll answer them, adding a little bit of my experience. ;)

1. What are braces? What do they do?

Dental braces (also known as orthodontic braces, or simply braces) are devices used in the orthodontic industry that help align and straighten teeth and help to position them with regard to a person’s bite, while also working to improve dental health. They are often used to correct under bites, as well as, malocclusions, overbites, cross bites, open bites, deep bites, crooked teeth, and various other flaws of the teeth and jaw. source

My purpose of wearing them is to correct one of my front teeth which is a bit crooked and went out of line from my other set of front teeth. To me it looks annoying, ye la, sebab dia sekor je yang terkeluar. Tiap2 hari pon aku cuba tekan2 gigi tu masuk dalam tapi tak masuk-masuk jugak. Lastly, I decided, pakai braces la. Actually I have been planning to wear braces since I was 14. I've been to the orthodontist a couple of times to get my teeth moulded and x-rayed and stuff. But when the time comes, I chickened out. Yup, I have always been terrified of dentists. I know, I know, typical Malaysian attitude. Sebab tu aku rasa Malaysians ni kurang menitikberatkan oral hygiene sikit. Kalau sakit gigi tu, tahan ja, telan ubat macambagai. Sampai rasa nak mati tak tahan dah baru la pergi jumpa doktor. Sayang ok, gigi tu. Dah la rawatan yang melibatkan gigi sangat mahal tau!

2. What are the differences between a conventional braces (normal braces) and the self-ligating type?

Ok, this is simple. The difference lies in the bracket type. Conventional braces (normal braces) uses a rubber band to hold the arch wire together.  Metal braces are the most common. They are made of high grade stainless steel. Today's braces are much smaller and more comfortable. Therefore they are much more attractive. Most of the patients like to dress up the braces with different color elastics that can be changed at each appointment. Multiple colors are available. source

The self-ligating bracket on the other hand uses a clip that was initially built-in on the bracet. these clips can be opened with a special instrument and closed by fingers. Self-ligating braces offer several benefits for patients. They use a self-ligation technique using lighter wires and lower friction brackets to move teeth, while resulting in faster treatment times due to its slide mechanism, strong, mechanical base bonding and solid walls structured to control tooth movement with speed and efficiency. In addition to greater comfort, self-ligating braces make it easier to maintain good hygiene because they are easier to keep clean. This contributes to greater health, happiness and physical attractiveness for the duration of patient treatment. source

Before putting on these braces, I made loooots of research about the types of braces. My hometown is in Kedah, but not many orthodontists in Kedah offer self-ligating braces. Most just use the conventional brackets. Punah harapan aku. After a few days I found a page on FB (Klinik Pergigian Yusmin Aznida) that suggests a dentist in Penang that does offer self-ligating braces. I called, and apparently they do have self-ligating braces! Plus klinik tu klinik pakar, dan doktornya pulak perempuan (Dr. Hani), jadi aku pujuk diri yang doktor perempuan ni lemah-lembut sikit kan, tak la kasar-kasar. So I called the clinic, and assisstant doktor tu tersangatlah baik compared to klinik2 kat Kedah yang aku call sebelum2 ni. Kak Wan nama dia. She helped me with the price guide, and patiently answered all the questions I have about the self-ligating braces. Immediately, I made an appointment to see the Dr. Hani the very next day jugak.

When I was there, Dr. Hani tanya, nak cabut gigi terus ke, and I said ok sebab: 1. dah la jauh nak drive from rumah aku ke sini (130km one way!) 2. Nak buat cepat sebab lagi 2 minggu dah nak start kerja. Aku dah cuti dekat 2 bulan kat rumah tapi sebab tak dapat lagi tawaran keja, so taknak buat braces lagi. Nak confirm dulu keja kat Kedah. Takot nanti kena tukar-tukar klinik, susah pulak kan. So 1st appointmrnt, terus cabut 2 batang gigi molar kat atas, gigi sebelah taring tu. Gigi bawah tak perlu cabut sebab ada ruang, last year aku dh cabut 1 geraham yang tersangatlah besar, sebab cavity yang tak dapat diselamatkan lagi. Apparently, on the first appointment, sebenarnya dah boleh pasang braces tu siap-siap. I didn't know about this, so tak bawak enough fulus. Jadi, terpaksalah buat appointment kedua, which was on the next two days.

3. How much do they cost?

According to the price list at the clinic I received my treatment, the cost for conventional braces (metal braces) is RM3500, minus the x-ray, scaling, and teeth extraction costs. All in all, the extra-extra stuff is about RM 300-RM400, depending on your case, like how many teeth need to be extracted, or if your teeth are too dirty you need a special kind of scaling, and stuff like that.

For the type of braces that I chose, which is self-ligating braces, the cost is RM5000 minus the extra2. I paid RM2000 for the down payment when I put the braces on, and then I have to pay RM 250 monthly each time I visit the clinic for check up. I guess it's not too bad, but adding this to the total of RM400 I have to pay every month for my car, it's a headache jugak lah kan. Tu tak kira sewa rumah lagi kalau kena menyewa, internet, food, medical supplement (for my recently-discovered low blood pressure), wedding saving, etc etc. Ah berapa la sangat gaji seorang cikgu kan. Tapi hendak tak hendak terpaksa jugak lah....So on Friday last week I went to the doctor, put them braces on!, which took about 1 hour (scaling 20mins+, put braces 40mins+). And walla! What I love most about the self-ligating braces offered at this clinic is that the brackets which are usually metal, are indeed clear! They only have metal bracket for the conventional braces, and only clear brackets for the self-ligating type. The clear braces help my aesthetic a little, considering that I am a teacher and I have to speak a lot. From afar, you won't really notice the braces, unless pakai teropong la kan. So yeay, bonus!

4. Does it hurt?

Bohong la kalau cakap tak sakit langsung. Aku pulak jenis takut sakit dan takut dentist. So memang chuak je tiap2 kali pegi appointment tu. Ok, mase nak cabut gigi 2 batang tu, tak sakit langsung. Jangan risau lah. Tapi untuk mendapatkan kesenangan tak sakit cabut gigi ni, gusi kita perlu dibius dahulu. Ok part bius ni sakit sikit la. Pedih bila kena cucuk. Did I tell you I'm super scared of needles? Yaeh, that didn't help either. Sampai pengsan la aku dibuatnya. Nasib baik ada kawan aku tolong angkatkan. Malu kot! Tapi jangan risau, aku pengsan bukan sebab sakit sangat ke apa. Masa Dr. Hani cabut gigi tu serious tak rasa apa pun.

Cuma lenguh sikit je bila Dr. Hani dan assisstant2nya menarik-narik lips aku to get a better view. So kepada sesiapa yang takut ke, takpun risau ke, boleh je bawak Ipod or MP3 dan pasang masa dentist tengah lekatkan braces tu. Aku dengar radio Dr. Hani je, siap ada caller buat lawak lagi, aku tergelak sampai kena marah dengan Dr. Hani sebab tak duduk diam hihi. So aku yang langsung tak tahan sakit ni boleh go through all this, so mesti anda yang gagh di luar sana boleh jugak.

Ok, I think that's all for now. I'll write again about my experiences of wearing self-ligating clear braces. Lepas ni banyak lagi nak tulis pasal braces ni. Nak buat ala-ala journal gitu. And nak letak gambar gigi sendiri pulak, tapi after dah cantik sikit.

Feel free to check out this page from time to time, to know more about braces. Hope this post can help many many out there who are interested about braces and orthodontics treatment. If you have any question, feel free to ask. I would be glad to help. Or maybe we can share experience? Kalau malu nak tanya sini, pm me through FB. Jangan takut, saya tak makan orang. ;p
